Home glucose meters: strips, units, and blood sugar logs
A home glucose meter (glucometer) reads capillary blood on a test strip. This page is about the meter, the strips, and the units (mg/dL or mmol/L). It is not a shopfront of “best meters,” and it is not a substitute for diabetes education from a clinician.
The meter is a sensor. The strip is a consumable. If either is sloppy, the log lies. Read how to take a capillary reading before you blame the device.
What the meter is — and is not
A fingerstick estimates glucose in capillary blood at that moment. Meters sold as medical devices are typically expected to meet ISO 15197 system-accuracy criteria. That is still not a laboratory venous glucose, not an HbA1c, and not a continuous glucose monitor (CGM).
Cold hands, expired strips, fruit juice on a fingertip, a second squeezed drop, and the wrong coding on older meters all create junk data. If a reading does not match how you feel, wash, repeat, and contact a clinician rather than stacking more strips “until it looks nicer.”
Meter, strips, and lancets
Over a year the meter is usually the cheap part. Strips are the recurring cost, and they are specific to a brand. A kit that looks inexpensive on day one becomes expensive if strips are scarce in your country. Check strip availability on your local Amazon store before you commit. Lancets are cheap; reusing them is a way to hurt more, not a way to save.
Counterfeit or unlabelled strips sold loose are not a bargain. You want a legitimate in-vitro diagnostic product that matches the meter sitting on your table.
Units: mg/dL vs mmol/L
Both units describe the same glucose. The United States mostly uses mg/dL; many other countries use mmol/L. The meter and your log must agree. Switching units halfway through a series will scramble the chart.
Rough conversion: mmol/L ≈ mg/dL ÷ 18 (18 mg/dL ≈ 1 mmol/L). Do not convert in your head at 2 a.m. if you can avoid it — set the meter once.
Bluetooth meters
Some meters sync to a manufacturer app over Bluetooth. You do not need that to keep a labelled log. Manual entry is enough if you actually type the number and whether it was before or after eating.
Fingerstick vs CGM
A CGM is a different tool with different lag, calibration rules, and alarms. A fingerstick logbook does not replace sensor therapy and it does not interpret trend arrows from another system.
Red flags
Confusion, severe sweating, a seizure, or a reading you cannot explain while using insulin or a sulfonylurea: follow the hypo or emergency plan you were given. A website does not override that plan. Very high readings with vomiting or breathing that smells unusual also need clinical contact, not another strip “to confirm the vibe.”

Frequently asked questions
Can a cheap glucose meter be accurate enough?
If it is a genuine medical device with in-date matching strips, it can be useful for a log. Counterfeit or loose strips sold in bulk bags are not a bargain. Meters aimed at ISO 15197 still do not replace a laboratory venous glucose.
